Beyond chitin: Three microbial production architectures forlandfill-degradable commodity plastics

The global bioplastics industry has invested heavily in materials certified for industrial composting — yet the vast majority of plastic waste enters anaerobic landfills where those materials do not degrade. CCG identified this as a regime mismatch: the field has been optimizing for the wrong constraint entirely. By reframing the target from industrial compostability to landfill-active biodegradability, the candidate landscape changes completely.
CCG conducted a systematic cross-domain analysis spanning microbial fermentation biology, polymer materials science, and techno-economic modeling to identify three production architectures with credible paths to commodity cost targets and genuine landfill degradability. The analysis was published as a peer-reviewed Short Review in the Journal of Biotechnology (Volume 419, 2026, pp. 53–57).
This project demonstrates CCG's core capability: identifying where an industry or research field has organized around the wrong foundational assumption, reframing the problem at the constraint level, and mapping a structured solution space with explicit evidence boundaries.
